Start by cutting out one of the decoupage prints using a craft knife and ruler or paper trimmer, this will form the base of your picture. Arrange the papers and print onto your card. You can use the layout shown in the example or design your own. Stick the papers, print and any embellishments in place.
You may wish to cover the raw edges of your print with ribbons. To do this spread a fine line of PVA glue along the edges of the print. Put one end of the ribbon onto one corner of the decoupage print and hold it in position with one finger. Pull the length of ribbon along the edge of the decoupage print and cut off the excess. Smooth the ribbon onto the card with your finger.
Peel offs can be used to frame prints or other elements of the design. To get your peel off borders perfectly straight hold one end in place and gently pull the rest of the peel off straight. Press i into place with your finger and cut off the excess.
Ink pads are very useful for adding a subtle border to a piece of card or paper. Just run the edges of the piece along the surface of the ink pad. For a more prominent border hold the ink pad at an angle so that more of the paper is in contact with the surface of the pad. To cover the whole of the piece with ink gently pull it across the surface of the ink pad.
Cut out each layer of the decoupage by following the cutting guide. If this is your first decoupage project you will probably find it easier to use scissors. Craft knives are more accurate once you have mastered the basic technique.
Extra depth can be given to your design by shaping the pieces as they are applied e.g. shaping the curves of a sail, the petals of a flower. This is done by placing the cut out face down on a shaping mat or soft cloth then rubbing it gently with a shaping tool or the back of a teaspoon. You can also use your fingers to shape the pieces.
Mount each cut out onto the card using the 3D foam pads, in the order they are shown in the cutting guide.
